DUMPSTER WHAT ??
“Dumpster diving, commonly referred to in the UK and many parts of Europe as totting, skipping, skip diving or skip salvage, is a popular form of modern salvaging of waste in large commercial, residential, industrial and construction containers to find items that have been discarded by their owners, but that may prove useful to the picker. It is not confined to dumpsters specifically, and may cover standard household waste containers, landfills or small dumps” Wikipedia
I had the luck to cross Yehonatan Yovel on my path thanks to a common friend Melissa. The born and raised Tel Avivian is an active member of the “We Have Food” community, which is a social-ecological initiative that encourages social dialogue and active action around the issues of food waste, radical urbanism, sustainability, community collaboration and urban ecology.
Every Friday, at the closing of the most famous food market of the city, HaCarmel Market, the collective meet in order to save food from the dumpster. This was specially interesting to do this during Purim, where the city is transformed into a huge carnival.
SHOOK DIVING, YALLA !
There are two way to dumpster-dive here :
- Pick-up stuff on the ground.
- Ask the sellers (preferred way).
The firsts who find enough food are bringing it to the decided area and wait for others, doing shifts, a bit like in the army.
Get ready to get-out of your comfort zone and let’s go.
So let’s see what we got here :
- Loads of vegetables and fruits
- Bread (a lot)
- A box full of Humus
- A chocolate cake
Why you should do this in your town :
- The feeling of giving away food for free is exceptional
- You save food from garbage
- You help the ones in need
- You meet interesting people, the market is a great place to share.
To finish, here is a unicorn for an even better happy ending
